Help & Troubleshooting

Short answers first. If yours isn't here, write to hello@audiodoc.io, we answer every message.

Recording & microphones

I hit Record and nothing happens.

First, is a microphone actually connected? Some devices don't have a built in microphone. Plug in a USB microphone, a headset, or a webcam with a mic, then press Record again. If AudioDoc can't find any microphone, it now tells you so on screen.

Nine times out of ten, something else is holding your microphone. Close every other browser and any app that uses a mic (Zoom, Discord, Teams, a voice recorder), then try again. If it still won't start, restart your computer, that releases a stuck microphone every time.

Also check that your browser is allowed to use the mic: when you press Record the browser should ask "Allow microphone?", say yes. If it never asks, click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.

Since v945, AudioDoc shows a box on screen explaining exactly why recording couldn't start.

It's recording, but I don't hear myself.

That's on purpose while the take is rolling, the mic is never sent to your speakers, because that causes a feedback squeal. You'll see a live red waveform instead. Play the track back after you stop.

My recording sounds thin, hollow, or "underwater."

Use a wired microphone or your laptop's built-in mic. Bluetooth earbuds switch to a low-quality "phone call" mode the moment they're used as a microphone, and everything you record through them sounds like a phone call. Pick your mic with the MIC button in the header.

The click track / metronome is too loud or too quiet.

Use the − / + volume buttons in the recording setup box that appears when you press Record. Each press plays one click so you can hear the level. The metronome in Toolbox has its own volume.

My recording is out of time with the backing track.

Wear wired headphones when recording over other tracks, so the mic doesn't pick up the speakers. AudioDoc measures and trims your device's latency automatically; if a take still lands late, grab the clip's box and slide it into place, the yellow guide line snaps it to the other tracks.

Which microphone does AudioDoc use?

The first time you record, it asks. Tick "Always use this mic" to stop being asked. Change it any time with the MIC button.

Playback & headphones

I plugged in a USB microphone and my speakers went silent.

This one is your computer, not AudioDoc. Many USB microphones have a headphone jack on them, so when you plug one in, your computer decides the microphone is also your new speakers and sends all the sound there.

The fix: click the speaker icon near the clock on your computer, open the list of output devices, and switch it back to your speakers or headphones. On Windows it's also under Settings, System, Sound, Output. On a Mac it's System Settings, Sound, Output. Leave the USB mic selected under Input only.

The sound should come right back. If it doesn't, press Stop and Play once in AudioDoc, or reload the page.

No sound at all.

Check the VOL knob, your computer's volume, and that the right output device is selected in your system's sound settings. Some browsers mute audio until you've clicked something on the page, click Play once more.

Bluetooth earbuds sound bad after I record.

They were switched into call mode by the recording. AudioDoc releases the mic as soon as you stop, and most earbuds pop back to stereo within a second or two. If yours don't, take them out and back in.

Should I use headphones?

For listening, whatever you like. For recording over other tracks, yes, wired ones. It's the difference between a clean take and a muddy one.

Files & saving

What can I load?

MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, and video: MP4, MOV, WEBM (AudioDoc pulls the audio out). Drag the file onto a track or click the track to browse.

Where do my recordings go? Are they private?

Everything stays on your device. AudioDoc processes audio in your browser and never uploads your recordings or projects. When you export, the file downloads to your computer like any other download.

What's a .audiodoc file?

It's your project, every track, box, knob, and effect setting, so you can come back later. It does not contain the audio itself: keep the project file and the audio files you loaded in the same folder, and don't rename them. If you move on to another computer, take the whole folder.

My exported file is quieter or louder than what I heard.

Export renders exactly the chain you were hearing, with a safety limiter to stop clipping. If it sounds different, check the ORIGINAL AUDIO A/B button wasn't on when you exported, and that no track was muted or soloed.

Sign-in & account

The code never arrived.

Check spam and promotions folders, it comes from hello@audiodoc.io. Codes expire after 10 minutes; use "Send a new code." You can also sign in with your backup email or, if you added one, your phone number (we text the code).

I can't remember which email I used.

Try the sign-in screen with each address you might have used, it tells you if there's no account. If you added a backup email or phone number, those work too. Still stuck? Email us and we'll find you.

Why do I have to sign in at all?

So your plan, presets, and beats follow you, and so a code in your inbox is all it takes to get back in. No password to remember, no password to leak.

How do I delete my account?

Email hello@audiodoc.io from your account address. We'll confirm and remove everything we hold.

General

Which browsers work best?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, kept up to date. Privacy-focused browsers sometimes block the microphone or local storage by default, which breaks recording and saving; if something's off, try Chrome or Edge before anything else.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, open audiodoc.io in your phone's browser. Everything works, just smaller. A laptop is nicer for serious editing.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, yes: you can record, edit, and export with no connection. You'll need to be online to sign in and to save presets and beats to your account.

What are edu-bubbles and Sound Bites?

Edu-bubbles are the plain-English explanations on every knob, hover to read what it does and what to listen for. A Sound Bite is one short studio lesson that appears each day when you open AudioDoc.

I found a bug.

Thank you, really. Use Report a Bug inside the studio (it sends us your browser and device details automatically), or email hello@audiodoc.io.
